In some external units, known as automated external defibrillators (AED), they automate the diagnosis of treatable rhythms, meaning that lay responders or regular people are able to use them successfully with little or training. Internal defibrillators are used by medical personnel in hospitals while external defibrillators (AED) are more commonly found in public buildings and homes.
